While scientists and engineers aren’t the only contributors to the innovation economy, they play a key role in promoting economic growth and competitiveness. The National Science Board as well as a wide range of policymakers and scholars agree that science and engineering workers are a critical component of an innovative economy “because of their high skill level, their creative ideas, and their ability not only to advance basic scientific knowledge but also to transform advances in fundamental knowledge into tangible and useful products and services” (National Science Board).

For a sense of how PA compares to other states: in 2019 the average percent of science and engineers in the workforce across all 50 states was 4.6%. Maryland had the highest percentage of 7.8% and Louisiana the lowest at 2.4%

Historical Dataset starting with School Year 2016-2017 through the most Current School Year enrollments for all publicly funded schools in Pennsylvania as reported by school districts, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools, intermediate units, and state operated educational facilities. Local education agencies were asked to report those students who were enrolled and attending as of October 1, of the later year.

Statewide and county totals include counts of students attending education classes on a full-time basis outside their parents' district of residence. This data was obtained from the Bureau of Special Education.

Intermediate Unit and CTC Part-day enrollments are excluded from county and state totals.

Statewide and county totals are unique counts of students being educated by public Local Education Agencies. LEA and School level reports may not sum to the County and Statewide totals.

The Index considers 106 indicators across R&D inputs, risk capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure, human capital investment, technology and science workforce, and technology concentration and dynamism. Though there are some areas the Milken Index does not account for.
