The Department of Environmental Protection's mission is to protect Pennsylvania's air, land and water from pollution and to provide for the health and safety of its citizens through a cleaner environment. We will work as partners with individuals, organizations, governments and businesses to prevent pollution and restore our natural resources.

DEP's Regional Offices are responsible for implementing department programs through permitting, inspection, enforcement, and other field services for environmental and public health protection; program and technical support to Pennsylvania's 66 conservation districts; and compliance assistance to our regulated community. In addition, staff in the regional offices provide assistance to the public in the form of emergency response, disaster recovery, pollution prevention, and energy assistance and complaint response.

The regional offices directly implement the Air Quality, Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields, Radiation Protection, Waste Management, Watershed Conservation and Restoration, Clean Water, Waterways and Wetlands, and Safe Drinking Water Programs. Each regional field office is structured in the same manner to consistently implement these programs and services statewide. Additionally, the regional offices provide support services to the Active and Abandoned Mining Operations and Oil and Gas Management programs.

In 2019, DEP launched the Regional Permit Coordination Office (RPCO). This move addressed a need to establish a centralized entity to provide Chapter 102/105 permitting functions for certain large and complex projects and to provide statewide technical support and coordination. This data shows DEP’s performance under the terms of its Permit Decision Guarantee Policy. All authorizations that have time frames listed in Appendix A of that Policy are grouped by program and by fiscal year. Trends in the column “Disposed on Time” reflect DEP’s progress toward the aspirational goal of 100% of received permits processed on time.
The data shows actions that occurred in each fiscal year. For example, it shows the number of applications received in that year and the number disposed in that year. If an application is received in one year and disposed in the next year, then it will be counted in “Received” for the first year and in “Disposed” for the next year.

Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) is EPA’s national database that manages and collects public water system information from states, including reports of drinking water standard violations, reporting and monitoring violations, and other basic information. The data derived in the State of Pennsylvania is published and searchable online on the www.pa.gov website. This set contains the Water System Facility data, which will be updated annually for the prior calendar year in the first Quarter of the following year.
