Rebuild public infrastructure to meet 21st century challenges and needs
"My vision for Pennsylvania includes vibrant towns and cities with new development, opportunities in rural and disadvantaged areas, and a modern, interconnected commonwealth."-Governor Tom Wolf
Why is this goal important?
Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest transportation networks in the country – encompassing 121,000 miles of roads, 32,000 bridges, 6,000 miles of freight and passenger rail, three maritime ports, 38 transit systems, and 134 public-use airports. This network is essential to a thriving economy and to the quality of life of Pennsylvania's residents and visitors. Pennsylvania state government must support the commonwealth's infrastructure with timely maintenance and smart investments to ensure that it continues meeting the public's needs for years to come.
What are we working on to reach this goal?
Since Governor Wolf took office, he has made
rebuilding Pennsylvania's infrastructure a top priority. The governor has
announced a plan for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to
invest more than $2 billion in roadway maintenance and highway and bridge
capital projects over the next 10 years through its new Road
Maintenance and Preservation (Road MaP) program. Governor Wolf reinforced
his administration's commitment to rural communities with plans to improve more than 1,100 rural and low-volume roadway
miles and rehabilitate or replace at least 85 municipally owned bridges over
five years. As part of his Resurface
PA initiative, Governor Wolf directed
PennDOT to prioritize $181 million to accelerate repaving work on interstates
and attack potholes across Pennsylvania. At the start of his second term, Governor Wolf
announced a major new infrastructure initiative – Restore
Pennsylvania. Funded by the
monetization of a common sense severance tax, Restore Pennsylvania will invest $4.5
billion over the next four years in high-impact projects
that will prevent flooding, eliminate blight, and extend high-speed internet
access to all Pennsylvanians.
